May 15, 2008

The Bonner Springs boys track team was unable to defend its Kaw Valley League championship on Wednesday, May 7, but the Braves didn’t go down easily.

Mill Valley edged Bonner Springs in the team standings, 142-129, but the Braves nearly pulled off the championship thanks to five first-place finishes in various events and three second-place finishes.

Mill Valley also won the girls team title, the eighth straight time the Lady Jaguars have accomplished that feat.

The Braves had many outstanding performances and won 12 individual medals.

Jeremy Walker took first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.84 seconds, second in the long jump with a distance of 22 feet, 7 1/2 inches and second in the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.11.

Jonathan Walker took first in the 200 with a time of 22.89 and first in the 110 hurdles in 14.80.

Ian Briggs finished third in the 100 with the time of 11.34 and L.T. Lee finished third in the 200 with a time of 23.83.

The Walker brothers, Lee and Briggs continued their season-long dominance in the 400 relay, taking first in 43.38.

The 1,600 relay team finished second in 3:31.30.

James Carter turned in a solid meet in the middle distance races. He cruised to a first-place finish in the 400 in 51.20 and added a pair of seconds in the 800 (2:06.89) and the 1,600 (4:44.90). Brooks Ballou bolstered the distance effort with a third-place finish in the 3,200 in 10:30.20.

Bridgett Bradley was the only Bonner girl that medaled at the league meet. She took third in the discus with a toss of 107-0.

Bonner Springs’ next test, particularly for its standout sprinters, will come at 3:30 p.m. Friday at the Class 5A regional meet at Mill Valley.

As good as the Braves have been this season, coach Jim Mitchell said his team will have its hands full with some of the other talented teams there.

Mitchell has his team prepared and ready for the task. He said he intends to utilize his top runners Lee, the Walkers, Briggs and Carter in various events at regionals in hopes that they do well enough to qualify for state in multiple events.

“It’s going to be a tough regional,” Mitchell said. “We are going to have to run well.”
