BSHS golfer Wallace 2nd at KVL tourney

May 8, 2008

— Cody Wallace played his best round of golf of the season Monday at the Kaw Valley League championships, and his score of 78 landed the Bonner Springs High School senior in second place for the second straight year.

“I was hoping to go first, but Maria played excellent today,” he said. “She made it tough to beat.”

Maria Jackson, a Lansing senior, was the individual champion with a 75. Wallace and Jackson have played against each other numerous times during the past four years, oftentimes in the same group.

Both players flourished on the first good weather day of the season. Jackson hit the fairways off the tee, made accurate chips and knocked down routine putts. Wallace did the same.

“It’s great to always know there’s competition out there, and that always makes me want to do a little bit better and push myself, but she was unstoppable today,” Wallace said.

Wallace was one of just three golfers to shoot in the 70s, and he was the only Brave to shoot below 90.

Jerritt Barbarich and Steven Walker each shot 91, James Canada had a 99 and Logan Opat shot 101.

BSHS finished sixth in the team standings with a four-person score of 359. Lansing won the team title with 321, Basehor-Linwood was second with 333 and Tonganoxie shot 336.

Bonner Springs next competes in the Class 5A regional tournament at 10 a.m. Monday at Sunflower Hills Golf Course.

Wallace, a 2007 state qualifier, said the Braves should benefit from playing on their home course.

“It gives us a great edge,” he said.
