College baseball dream finally becomes reality
May 7, 2008
Looking back on his time in high school, Kevin DeVore, Bonner Springs High School senior, said it was almost one big blur.
From staying busy with sports and social activities, DeVore said he could hardly belief that graduation was already upon him.
DeVore will be graduating with the rest of his class tonight, and like many, he said he feels a mixture of emotions that range from sadness at leaving old friends to excitement for the future he has yet to see.
After graduation DeVore will be attending the University of Saint Mary in Leavenworth. He’s signed an intent-to-play contract for the school’s baseball team as both a pitcher and outfielder.
During high school and pretty much all his childhood, baseball was a passion for DeVore that kept him focused and determined. He tried out several over sports during that time, but baseball was the one that stuck.
“I just love the feeling of being on the field,” he said.
It’s been years of hard work, but he said he’s finally achieving a longtime dream to play college ball. He said he’s still in a sort of daze since signing with Saint Mary that “it almost doesn’t feel real.”
While at college DeVore plans to major in sports management. He said he wasn’t exactly sure what he wanted to do with that degree in the long run, but that whatever he was going to choose, it would involve sports. Becoming a coach is one option that he’s considered while preparing to face what lay ahead.
DeVore will live at home and commute to school in Leavenworth. He said he’s ready for the college lifestyle and isn’t nervous about having to make new friends. He knows a few people who were friends of his sister who attends Saint Mary, so he said he hopes they help him learn the ropes.
For right now, DeVore said he is excited for one of his last nights with his BSHS friends. He said he was looking forward to the Project Grad party after the ceremony at PowerPlay in Shawnee because almost everyone from his class is planning to attend.
