Weather cuts Bravettes’ soccer match short
Spring Hill escapes with 1-0 victory
May 3, 2008
Bonner Springs lost to visiting Spring Hill by a score of 1-0 on Senior Night Thursday at David Jaynes Stadium.
At halftime seniors Jessica Hogland and Alyssa Kelly joined their parents at midfield and were greeted by a warm round of applause as the announcer congratulated them for their soccer careers at the high school.
The Bravettes seemingly dominated the first half but could not capitalize when they were in position to score. They also played more physical than their opponent in the first half by continually winning one-on-one battles and controlling the midfield. In front of the goal was a different story, however. Many times Broncos defenders arrived a split second before the Bravettes could decide whether to shoot or pass. Often the choice was made too late and the game remained scoreless at halftime.
Spring Hill's Madison Smith broke the tie early in the second half when she kicked a penalty kick past the lunging Bonner Springs goalkeeper, Tiffany Burgoon. The two teams exchanged shots on goal as the half went on, but none hit the back of the net.
The best chance for another goal came with about 20 minutes remaining in the game as Broncos striker Mei-Mei Senthavy outraced everyone down the field and unleashed a sliding shot, but Burgoon did not waiver. She gobbled up the shot as Senthavy slid into her legs.
Burgoon’s effort saved a goal but cost her an injury to her leg that forced her to be helped off the field in a lot of pain. By the time she reached the sideline lightning filled the skies surrounding Bonner Springs.
A 45-minute weather delay sent the teams into the locker room and fans ducking for cover. Just as the players were coming back onto the playing surface, lightning struck again and sent the girls scrambling back for the locker room. The second delay caused the game to be called with 15:28 remaining on the clock.
