May 2, 2008
Bonner Springs High School seniors Zach Holder and Kyle Toland earned their first trip to the Class 5A state tennis tournament Thursday when they earned a fourth-place finish in doubles at the regional tournament.
Playing on their home courts at BSHS, the duo earned the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye. They proceeded to knock off St. Thomas Aquinas’ Nathan Shriver and Jonathon Wirtzathon, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 to qualify for state.
Their semifinal match against Lansing’s Ezra Carpenter and Mo Meyer was intense and featured a pair of tiebreakers, but they ultimately lost 7-6 (13-11), 6-7 (4-7), 6-2.
Lansing’s Eric Hansen and Daniel Miskowic then beat them 6-3, 6-1 in the third-place match.
Despite the back-to-back losses, Holder and Toland advanced to state.
The state tournament will take place May 9-10 at Wulz Riverside Tennis Center in Wichita.
