Bonner Springs softball swept by Piper, Tonganoxie

May 1, 2008

The Bonner Springs Bravettes were shut out in both games against Lansing on Monday night, falling 11-0 and 10-0.

The first game was ended after six innings and the latter lasted five.

Many times this year BSHS has performed less than stellar in the field, causing unearned runs to score for the opponent. That was the case Friday when Tonganoxie swept Bonner Springs, 14-1 and 9-1.

BSHS coach Roger Davidson said that was not the case Monday night, however.

“The girls did a good job catching the ball when it was hit to them, but Lansing hit the ball really hard and in holes all night,” he said. “They earned the runs they got.”

He added that the lack of offensive production is due to their inability to string hits together, and when they do, disaster strikes. Last night two base runners were thrown out at home plate on consecutive plays.

Add those kinds of mistakes in with the superior talented pitching and hitting of Bonner’s last few opponents, and presto, you have a recipe for a losing streak.

The struggles were a bit surprising after BSHS turned in a solid performance for two games Thursday in a split with Mill Valley. The Bravettes dropped the opener, 2-1, and won game two by the same score.

Davidson is not happy with the results on the field during the last four games, and his team isn’t either, but he said they would continue to try to improve in practice and in the few remaining games on the schedule.

“It takes time to build a program,” he said. “We are building for next year and the years after, and that is what we are doing right now at Bonner Springs.”

The Bravettes are slated to play in the Turner Invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Monday is Senior Day for the Bravettes, and the seniors will be recognized between games of their doubleheader with Basehor-Linwood. First pitch is at 4:30 p.m.
