- If you drive by Bonner Springs High School at 6 a.m. on Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays you can see the signs of dedication in the student parking lot as cars are parked. Inside, students are lifting and training on the Bonner Springs powerlifting team. “I am really impressed with their drive and determination, they show up at 6 a.m.on those days. There is nothing worse than squatting heavy at 6 a.m.,” coach Justin Howe said. “They don’t need a lot of pushing. I think it helps being involved with this nationwide program. They can compare themselves to schools in the nation. Jake Barren the team’s captain is ranked in the nation.
- Basehor girls win powerlifting meet

- The Basehor-Linwood girl’s powerlifting team finished in first place on Feb. 2 in a meet at Emporia High School. Coach Ross Schwisow characterized the meet as “highly competitive” and it featured more than 380 participants. The boys and junior teams both took third place. “We had alot of lifters score points for the team as well as several place in the top 3 in their weight class,” Schwisow said. “Our boys team did well also, however we had several experienced lifters recieve no lifts which is very costly.”

- Caleb Seaton had been sick all week. He had the flu and was running a fever on Friday. It was a 50/50 proposition as to whether the 103-pounder from Bonner Springs High School would even be allowed to wrestle on Saturday at Lansing High. Seaton, though, is a glass half full type of athlete and the freshman, with his 31-2 record, wanted to see how well he could perform in Kaw Valley League tournament. The answer was at a championship level. He won the championship match in thrilling fashion. “I just kept pushing it,” he said. “I didn’t give up in the match.” The performance earned the admiration of other coaches. “Caleb really gutted it out in finals,” Basehor-Linwood coach Scott Neil said. Bonner Springs coach Dan Burns said his freshman wrestler was an inspiration of the mats. “He did really well and showed a lot of character,” Burns said. “He found something from within that allowed him to overcome a deficit. In the end, he had the heart to get it done. It makes you feel good to see that. Everybody gets sick, but he made the decision and apparently knew he could get it done.” Seaton said it phenomenal to win the Kaw Valley League title. “It feels pretty good,” he said. “My brother won it one time and I wanted to win it.” He said the finals match was a constant struggle.
- Fond memories abound from working at Sacred Heart School

- The City of Bonner Springs has started dismantling and tearing down the old Sacred Heart School as they are making preparations to begin construction of the City Library which will be on the Southeast corner where the old rectory was located. The area where the old school now stands will be used as a parking lot. The old Sacred Heart School has left me with many fond memories. A reminder of the fond memories comes when I run into a former player I coached, Amy Smith.

- Bonner Springs placed second in the ICSSC swim meet last week 356 points. The Braves finished behind a dual team of swimmers from Osawatomie-Paola High Schools who finished with 615 points. The Paola-Osawatomie team had numerous teams entered in relay events, which made the scoring disparity wider.

- Members of the Bonner Springs High School boys basketball team started slow and never caught up against Louisburg High School on Tuesday. Louisburg jumped out to a 19-7 at the end of the first quarter and won the game 65-49. “It was our typical cold start that we always have,” Braves coach Ryan Hull said. “We got it down to three points and two points, but that was as close as it got. We missed a lot of wide-open shots.” After trailing by double digits at the end of the first quarter on Tuesday, Bonner Springs mounted a rally in the second quarter. The Braves cut the lead to 23-17 in the second quarter before Louisburg closed the half out on a 10-6 run.

- Bonner Springs girls basketball players struggled from the start in a 70-42 loss to Louisburg on Tuesday. “They beat us from start to finish and we were down 20 points at halftime of the game,” coach Clay Oakes said. “There is not much to say after the game. We have got work to do tomorrow. We knew that they would be a tough team and they were.” The Wildcats used an impressive low post game of Katelynn O’Hara and Abbie Frazier to open up the lead. The players were able to hit shots from the inside during the game.
