- Arrival of the mail was a special occasion
- February 6, 2008
- When I was a youngster on a western Kansas farm, the high point of the day was usually the arrival of the mail. We didn’t have television and we were a long way from stores. Since my parents subscribed to the “Hutchinson Herald,” news came at noon usually. My father didn’t read the newspaper with breakfast, but with dinner (which was for us at noon). My father grew up in Hutchinson and kept his ties to that city with its newspaper. The “Hutchinson Herald” wasn’t just hometown news, however. It was a daily and had a Sunday edition which we received on Monday. It was an important tie to the larger world. My father studied carefully the agricultural news and the prices of livestock and grain. If we children were lucky, he read the funny papers to us. Newspapers were important to us as was all the rest of the stuff delivered by our mailman.

- ‘White chocolate’ a lasting figure for some
- February 6, 2008
- Every so often I am confronted by what I deem to be the tastiest cookie ever invented, which features hazelnuts and chunks of white chocolate as its main ingredients. Usually, this cookie appears in a display case as an alternative to the more pedestrian yet more popular milk chocolate chip cookie. And happily, the run on cookies made with milk chocolate chips usually means there’s an ample supply of my preferred cookie. Oddly, I had never baked hazelnut and white chocolate cookies because my immediate family members don’t like white chocolate. Then I realized that some of my students share my infatuation with this cookie and set about finding a recipe. This detailed recipe is from Judy Rosenberg’s “Rosie’s Bakery Chocolate-Packed, Jam-Filled, Butter-Rich, No-Holds-Barred Cookie Book.” Despite the cumbersome title and the overly complicated and exacting instructions in many of its recipes, this cookbook has yielded some impressive treats over the years. The following recipe is for a drop-style cookie, which may be a Valentine’s option for someone who doesn’t like darker chocolates.

- Recruiting services often miss mark on ascending programs
- February 6, 2008
- I love Signing Day, which took place on Wednesday, for completely nonsensical reasons. I only sporadically follow recruiting throughout the year, mostly to check on whom the Jayhawks are pursuing. The vast majority of players, anonymous high school students from around the country, I have never heard of. And the biggest reason that I, and everyone else, should pay no heed to this day is the mountain of evidence that the rankings are a guessing game. Look no further than Lawrence, where the Jayhawks had recruiting classes ranked nationally of 50, 38, 48 and 51 over the last four years, according to Rivals.com. Those classes made up a team that won 12 games and the Orange Bowl. Mark Mangino has always bypassed normal modes of evaluation, large recruiting bases such as Rivals and Scout.com, and trusted the ability of his coaching staff to spot talented players that have fallen through the cracks. Mangino’s 2004 class, for instance, was ranked 51st nationally. Those players were the backbone of the Orange Bowl team, including these “2-star recruits:” Aqib Talib, Anthony Collins, Joe Mortensen, Dexton Fields and Ryan Cantrell.
