New Web site debuts today
December 12, 2007
Today marks the introduction of the Chieftain’s new, improved Web site.
Though readers will find it at the same location, www.bonnersprings.com, the site features a new architecture, which will make it easer for users to navigate. It also includes many new features that will allow a much richer Internet experience:
• Readers will be able to post comments on stories in The Chieftain. This feature will replace the existing Public Forum.
• Increased capability to establish online “chats” with government officials or other sources about important issues.
• Much-improved search capability.
• The capacity to subscribe to e-mail editions and breaking news alerts.
• More weather information, with extended forecasts, sunrise, sunset, moonrise, moonset tables and severe weather alerts.
• A much richer interactive environment.
• Archives are much easier to browse.
• Calendars are more interactive, rather than just a simple list of events. Readers can search for events, or submit events of their own.
• The new site provides more opportunities for readers to submit material.
The site was redesigned by the award-winning team at Mediaphormedia, a division of The World Company, which publishes The Chieftain.

Well, I guess I am alone in expressing my surprise and disgust with this new change of Forum. But rest assured I am not going to be alone forever. I know at least on Forum Fam member who will be here to back me up. Oh, BTW, this change sux, but it's exactly what the phreaks deserve.

Ditto to all of the comments. While there certainly was a fair amount of garbage on the old forum site, at least it was a voice for those in the community to express opinions. This is what happens when the media becomes controlled by fewer and fewer people. FM radio is just about dead in most cities. Other than a handful of newpapers in major cities, the news is just reprinted AP stories and small town papers are no longer owned by a local publisher. Welcome to the Brave New World!

I think a lot depends on how well the Chieftain follows it's own rules. Didn't the old forum have all the same rules ? And while commenting on a story is alright, there is no avenue to discuss anything else, I think it is really a shame that one or two people effectively forced this paper to change. I'm also curious as to whether the obvious bias will still dictate who can post what. Whatever comes of this it will never be a place where people feel comfortable just talking and I consider that a loss.

Perhaps the newspaper was just updating technology. Probably had nothing to do what anyone was saying on the old forum. If people there feel they need to continue their diatribe, maybe they should just create their own blog site. Or maybe a Facebook or a MySpace for Edwardvillians.

Sorry apple but if you really believe that this change had nothing to do with what was going on in the old forum I think you are very mistaken. Another avenue has already been created but that doesn't diminish the fact that the Chieftain failed with respect to the forum and this replacement is a sad one.

I can't believe it! I already had a comment deleted!
I sure hope it was by mistake. All I did was comment on the article regarding the new business in Edwardsville. I wrote that I was excited for the new business and couldn't wait to check it out.
POOF! It's gone!
I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt and assume that it was a mistake. Obviously I'm not banned, so it must have been a mistake.

TMan—if you think that the change was the result of the “people” on the old forum, you are very mistaken. This new site is just that—new and redesigned. The forum pages are a thing of the past. Look at other newspapers sites. Most have a comment area that is attached to the end of stories. Like this one. To stimulate discussion on a specific topic.

“To stimulate discussion on a specific topic”.And thereby eliminating discussion on anything else. You prove my point. I understand that the forum pages are a thing of the past. I also understand why it came to be.

I think it is a wonderful change. It stops all of the stuff. Not as easy to insult others. Which is a wonderful thing. Also they have stepped up and can ban you at your ISP.
No more getting a new name and continue on with what ever. I like it~

Still curious Shy. How do you know that they can ban your IP now ? Don't get me wrong, I hope they can but I don't know how you would know that. It wasn't stated in any of the material pertaining to the new site. Do you have an inside source ? Are you an inside source ? Very interesting comment. Do you realize that an IP address comes from the modem you are using, not the computer ?How does that work when one is using a Sprint card from various locations around the country ?

You still failed to mention where you got the idea that the Chieftain can ban an IP address. Also when you say ” The modem will get most of them ” it really shows your lack of understanding how things function. The modem is where the IP is generated. I have one IP address at home and a different IP address at the office because they are different modems. I have yet another IP address when I am using my Sprint card.

Who provides the Internet to your home/job? The ISP.(Internet Service Provider) Where is your modem? I think we are saying the same thing.. You had asked about sprint cards and maybe wifi or libraries. Your Isp would not be the same. Why don't you call the Chieftain and ask? They would be able to answer your query

I'm pretty sure that those with some computer knowledge can recycle their IP addresses. Doesn't take much more than turning off your modem for 24 hours. That's what I heard anyway. Shy, I'm curious why you don't think insults can take place with this new system. Not that it really matters. Everybody that's anybody is at the Island, anyway. Lol. Are YOU somebody? Oh, no, don't phreak out, lol, that wasn't an insult. (Was it?) ;)
