The deteriorating conditions of streets in Edwardsville and how to repair them will be the subject a special City Council work session April 7.
City Administrator Doug Spangler presented the council information on upcoming street repair projects and the cost options and methods of repair.
Council members didn't agree with the plan, which was a basically a haydite and oil overlay instead of an asphalt overlay.
Council members also wanted to develop a more comprehensive street repair plan that looked at street repairs five to 10 years down the road.
Spangler said the asphalt overlay would be more expensive and would deplete funds quickly.
Yet, the council still wants to look at better ways of repairing streets, ditches and even look at building more sidewalks.
The meeting will start at 7 p.m. at City Hall.
Council members directed city staff to begin placing streetlights at certain corners and sections of the city.
The council had directed the police department and city staff to look at places in the city that needed streetlights and asked them to bring back a report Monday.
After reviewing the report, the council selected these locations for streetlights:
400 S. 98th St.; 1144 S. 98th St.; 1324 S. 98th St.; 1526 S. 102nd St.; 1701 S. 102nd St.; 10132 Riverview Road; and 105th and Shelton, both east and west intersections.
"I think it's important for our city to be lit for safety services, crime prevention and vision purposes," Council member Ed Gillette said.

In other action, the council
- approved the request to extend services with MAST ambulance service through July 1, 2004.
- accepted a proclamation designating March as Fair Housing month.
- changed the ordinance regarding the capacity of children in home daycares to follow state guidelines. The city had limited it to four children maximum; the state is six, unless licensed to have more.
