City questions candidate’s residency

February 1, 2001

The validity of a candidate's filing application for Bonner Springs City Council has raised a few eyebrows.

As of now, Bob Bradbury will challenge incumbent Councilman Doug Clements for his seat as the representative of Ward 2.

However, questions have arisen about whether Bradbury actually lives at the address he listed when he filed for election in April. It appears those concerns are unfounded.

According to the Wyandotte County Election Office, Bradbury listed 134 N. Nettleton Avenue in Bonner Springs as his address.

That location is the same address where Blevins And Bradbury, Inc., is located.

Bradbury said he works at the office and also lives there.

Taking up residence at the office building allows him to be something of a security guard for his company's equipment, which he said consists of thousands of dollars worth of computers and software programs. Bradbury said his residency doesn't effect his application for council.

A rumor surfaced about Bradbury's residency following the Jan. 23 filing deadline. Part of the rumor Bradbury actually lived in Olathe.

This is something Bradbury said is false, and he has lived in Bonner Springs for seven years.

In 1987, a new zoning ordinance made the area where Blevins And Bradbury, Inc., a business use only area. Prior to 1987, apartments were allowed on floors other than the ground floor. If Bradbury or his father lived there prior to 1987, the building would have been grandfathered into the new ordinance.

Bradbury said he has had discussions with City Attorney Joe Perry regarding the topic, but said, as he understands it, this will have no bearing on his ability to run for office.

"To me, this is a non-issue," he said.

The 48-year-old Bradbury said he decided to file for council because he wants to help in revitalizing downtown Bonner Springs and that surrounding neighborhoods are not overlooked.

"Bob stands for better opportunities in Bonner," Bradbury said.

Bradbury, a licensed architect, said his line of work has often put him in front of city councils to make presentations. Bradbury said that experience will help him if he is elected.

"I feel pretty in touch with the needs of the people and what their concerns are," he said. "I don't feel the present city council has done anything to enhance the neighborhoods."
