Bobcat teams post wins over Tonganoxie

December 21, 2000

The Basehor-Linwood High School basketball teams had an unexpected and unwanted vacation from the hardwoods because of last week's snow and ice storms, not playing a game since Dec. 8, a span of 11 days.

For the boys' squad, the lack of practice time was evident, but the Bobcats shrugged off their sluggishness and defeated Tonganoxie 57-47 at THS Tuesday night. BLHS is now 2-2 on the season.

"We kind of figured it wouldn't be a pretty game and it wasn't," said B-L head coach Dan Miller. "We've practiced once since a week ago Friday (Dec. 8) so it was pretty much what I expected. But I was very pleased. We hung in there, especially in the fourth quarter when we responded when we were behind."

Despite opening up a 10-point lead three minutes into the second quarter, the Bobcats found themselves down by three, 43-40, with six minutes left in the game.

But Basehor-Linwood's defense forced some Chieftain turnovers and the Bobcats found their shooting touch, scoring nine straight points in a 2:30 span for a 49-43 lead. BLHS scored 17 of the game's final 21 points as Travis Fouts and Brandon Fisher scored six points each for the Bobcats down the stretch.

"We let Tongy hang with us," Miller said. "We had opportunities to put the game away, especially at the free throw line in the first half, but we waited until a couple of minutes into the fourth quarter to get it going."

Though Miller was pleased with the victory, he was not pleased with his team's performance on the boards and the squad's ability to hold onto the ball.

Basehor-Linwood was outrebounded 32-28, but what miffed Miller was the fact that Tonganoxie had 14 offensive rebounds, allowing the Chieftains numerous extra chances.

"We're not doing a good job of boxing out. We're giving up entirely too many second shots," Miller said.

The Bobcats also turned the ball over 20 times in the contest, and are averaging 18.8 turnovers in their four games.

"If we're going to play competitively, we need to take better care of the basketball," said Miller. "We haven't played our best basketball yet and that's encouraging because I think when we show signs of what we can do I think it will be pretty good. We just need to put a full game together."

Fisher led the Bobcats in the contest with 19 points, including a trio of three-pointers. Fouts added 16 points and Jackie Kimlin had an all-around good game with 10 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals.
